Texturing Techniques 1

Planar or Flat mapping can be used to great effect to produce highly detailed renders. Excellent results can be obtained by projecting different layers from different sides and using opacity masks to mate the edges or to remove smearing.Your 3D application should have a menu or simple icons, such as below, which allow you to select which surface to project a texture onto.

[1]  First you need to take a screen capture of the side view, which must be taken absolutely square on [A].
Artwork can now be produced in Photoshop etc using the side view capture as an area and positioning guide. The finished artwork must be cropped to the very edges of the object to be rendered [B].

[2]  Once finished the artwork can then be projected onto the side of the car and a capture taken of top view [C]. From this capture you can clearly see not only the area for artwork to be positioned but also where the side projection finishes. Don't forget to trim down to the very edges of the object. A mask can also be created to blank out any overlap with the side artwork [D].

[3]  Our fully rendered car. The same process of capture, artwork and mask has been followed for the front and back views. To render the whole car the two sides would be produced and applied first, then the top with mask, followed by the front and rear with masks.

[4]  The finished side and top artwork, with the area that will be masked off shown here tinted [not on the actual artwork].
